Earth-grown diamonds come from humble beginnings and grow into precious gems. These diamonds are mined from deep under the earth's surface where they have lain dormant for millions of years. It's astonishing to reflect on the immense journey an earth-grown diamond has taken and the history it has endured when you hold one in the palm of your hand.
Each natural diamond starts out in the lowly form of graphite, the same material as you'll typically find in the tip of a pencil. Immense pressure and temperature produced deep inside the earth are applied over a period of hundreds of millions of years. This process slowly rearranges the carbon atoms into a crystal structure.
After miners dig deep tunnels under the earth, they're able to collect the rough diamonds. These gems don't have a naturally sparkly appearance, however. In fact, a rough diamond looks nothing like a brilliant diamond on an engagement ring. It has an irregular shape, is very dirty and looks dull. However, once the gem is cleaned, cut into the desired shape, and carefully polished, it becomes a beautiful diamond worthy of the most elegant piece of fine jewelry!
