The last year of the century, 1999 was all about Y2K, butterfly clips, Britney and boy bands. The internet was shiny and new, and there were no smartphones or Instagram. And as New York Magazine said, "We listened to music on stereos. We watched TV on TVs. We read books in books and newspapers on newspapers."
